Active Schools
The Active Schools Network in Scotland is a team of people working within the school and the wider community. Their goal is to offer all children and young people the motivation and opportunities to ‘get active’ ensuring there are more and higher quality opportunities for all children to participate in sport within schools and to increase capacity through the recruitment of a network of volunteers, who in turn deliver activity sessions in schools. In practice, this means that their job is to increase the number of opportunities for all children to get engaged in sport and also try to build bridges with sports clubs and other community organisations to give pupils a ‘pathway’ to continue their participation in sport outside of the school gates.
The Active schools team within Orkney have been in post since September 2004 with the overall aim of getting 'more people, more active more often'. The Active Schools team is made up of:
- Sport and Leisure Manager – Garry Burton
- Sport and Leisure Team Manager – Katell Roche.
- Active Schools Co-ordinator – Catherine Johnson.
- Active Schools Co-ordinator – Michael Swanney.
- Active Schools Co-ordinator – Carolynn Leslie.
- Active Schools Co-ordinator – Kirsty Spence.
A substantial part of the Active Schools programme is about working in partnership with local and national organisations and other departments within Orkney Islands Council. The team continues to work with partner agencies and where possible tries to share costs / resources and knowledge on how best to serve the people of Orkney.
