The Projects

We began looking for suitable sites for wind energy generation in 2016. Following our initial investigations, we found that there are limited options for wind farm development sites in Orkney due to the spread of houses and designated areas for wildlife. Additionally, some of the suitable sites are already under development by private companies.

We also needed sites that could meet OFGEM's 'needs case' conditions by their deadline of the end of 2022.

We realised that we needed to investigate three sites in order to contribute significantly to the needs case and that the wind farms would be big enough to be financially available under a low/zero subsidy environment.

Quanterness, Faray and Hoy were then selected as suitable sites. You can read more about each site and view key documents through the 'More pages in this section' section of this webpage.
