Stromness and South Isles By-Election 2024

A By-Election is to be held for the return of a Councillor for the Stromness and South Isles Ward of Orkney Islands Council.

  1. Nomination forms should be downloaded from the Council website and printed out, or if that is not possible, can be obtained from the Election Office at Council Offices, School Place, Kirkwall, Orkney, KW15 1NY, phone 01856 886350 or email electionoffice@orkney.gov.uk. This office is open for delivery of nomination papers on weekdays from Friday 9 February between 10 am and 4 pm.
  2. Completed nomination forms must be delivered to the Election Office at the above address by 4pm on Monday 26 February 2024. We can informally check your nomination papers prior to submission via email however when formally lodging your nomination papers please telephone the Election Office on 01856 886350 to arrange a suitable appointment.
  3. If more than one valid nomination is received, an election will be held and voting will take place between 7.00 am and 10.00 pm on Thursday 28 March 2024.
  4. Applications to register to vote must reach the Electoral Registration Officer at 8 Broad Street, Kirkwall, KW15 1NX by midnight on Tuesday 12 March 2024.

Postal or proxy voting

  1. Any elector may apply for a postal or proxy vote at this election.
  2. Applications, amendments or cancellations of postal and postal proxy votes must reach the Electoral Registration Officer at 8 Broad Street, Kirkwall, KW15 1NX by 5pm on Wednesday 13 March 2024.
  3. Applications to vote by proxy at this election must reach the Electoral Registration Officer at 8 Broad Street, Kirkwall, KW15 1NX by 5pm on Wednesday 20 March 2024.
  4. Applications to amend or cancel existing proxy arrangements must reach the Electoral Registration Officer at 8 Broad Street, Kirkwall, KW15 1NX by 5pm on Wednesday 13 March 2024.
  5. Applications to vote by emergency proxy at this election on the grounds of a medical emergency that will prevent a voter from going to the polling station or for work/service reasons must reach the Electoral Registration Officer at 8 Broad Street, Kirkwall, KW15 1NX by 5pm on Thursday 28 March 2024. The medical emergency must have occurred after 5pm on Wednesday 20 March 2024, or if the medical emergency occurred before 5pm on Wednesday 20 March 2024, the person could not reasonably be expected to apply by 5pm on Wednesday 20 March 2024. To apply on the grounds of work/service, the person must have become aware that they cannot go to the polling station in person after 5pm on Wednesday 20 March 2024.
