Winter Road Treatment FAQs

Gritter

Winter can bring tricky road conditions. With a small workforce and miles of rural roads to cover, we take a prioritised approach to treating our roads for ice and snow. Full details are available on our Winter Service Plan page but here are some of the most commonly received questions.

Where can I find a grit bin?

There are over 370 grit bins dotted around Orkney to help folk tend to problem spots not on the priority salting routes.

Grit bins are supplied for problem areas on public roads and footpaths – therefore please only take what’s needed and let us know when a bin is low (look for ‘Winter Services, gritting and grit bins’).

Grit bins should not be used to treat business premises/car parks as this should be supplied by businesses themselves. Ideally folks would have their own salt for their driveways and paths around their house too, to preserve supplies for public roads/footpaths (and the salt you can buy for home treatment is much more carpet friendly).

You can view a map of grit bins which is also where people can read more about our Winter Service Plan and policies and check the roads that are treated.
