What kind of notice period do you give people?

While we no longer issue’ 24 hours’ notice of possible disruption at the barriers, we do issue alerts when conditions call for a review.  We also issue updates on any subsequent anticipated review times based on ongoing conditions and forecasts.

We recommended folk who rely on the Barriers sign up to receive alerts from Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) via their free Floodline service alerts , in addition to monitoring tide times and weather forecasts throughout winter. Signing up to SEPA Floodline and keeping an eye on high tide times can help avoid you being caught out by conditions.

We do our best to issue updates as close as possible to stated review times -  but there are times when there could be a delay if our Police colleagues are called away to an emergency for example or if conditions are marginal and it’s felt that a few more minutes of observation would be helpful.
