Barriers Closure FAQ's
Winter can bring tricky road conditions, especially on the Churchill Barriers. Here are some of the most commonly asked questions.

What are you doing to improve conditions at the barriers so that the sea cannot come over them?
The most recent Council decision in respect of the overtopping issues at Barrier No 2 was taken in March 2021 when it was agreed by Councillors that no further studies be undertaken at this time in respect of wate overtopping at Barrier no 2. At that point it was also agreed to review options to enhance safety arrangement and explore financial support from the Scottish Government failing which the Council should determine what action to take.
We continue to call upon the Scottish Government to include the Churchill Barriers within the final version of Transport Scotland’s Islands Connectivity Plan. This would ensure the causeways are recognised as essential road links in the eyes of government ministers and would help to prioritise the improvement of these vital links.
Whilst communication with the Scottish Government remains ongoing, we will continue to listen to and engage with the South Ronaldsay & Burray Community Council on this important issue.
