Electrical Work - Existing Premises
Electrical Installations and Alterations
Existing Domestic Premises
Electrical works carried out to a house having no storey height greater than 4.5m or up to 2 storeys, which do not adversely affect a separating floor, wall, or the structure of the premises does not require Building Warrant approval. However, all electrical installations or alterations in such property must be completed in accordance with current Building Regulations.
The Electrical Safety Council recommends that homeowners or tenants use a registered installer for all electrical installation work. If you use a registered installer they will provide you with all the necessary Certificates to confirm that the work they have carried out meets the Building and Electrical Regulations.
Using a registered installer ensures that the work has been carried out by a competent person who has the skills and experience needed to avoid the dangers electricity can cause them and others. Safety for your home is very important, and we strongly recommend that you use a registered installer to carry out any electrical installation work.
The Regulations differ for electrical works in flats and houses with a storey height greater than 4.5m, or 3 storeys and above, you are recommended to contact Building Standards for further advice and guidance prior to commencing electrical alterations in these buildings.
