Supported Accommodation (Including Very Sheltered and Extra Care Housing)
2019-2020
What is Supported Accommodation
Orkney Health and Care, Orkney Housing and Orkney Island Property Development provide supported accommodation in St Margaret’s Hope, Kirkwall and Westray. Each property is leased on a tenancy basis. You are eligible to apply for a tenancy where you have an assessed need for support and housing.
How can I apply?
Once this service has been agreed, your Care Manager will carry out a financial assessment, which will determine how much you are charged for the care you receive. This may be a small amount or the full cost depending on your individual financial circumstances. The charge is based on your ability to pay.
Unlike residential care, however, you are a rent paying tenant, with all of the additional costs associated with living at home such as rent, heating and meals etc.
If you have savings or capital in excess of £28,000 you will have to pay the full charge for your care. If your savings or capital is less than this figure, then the charge is based on your weekly care allowance only. The care allowance is a benefit payment received from the Department for Work and Pensions. This is the only income that is taken into account in assessing your weekly charge.
Although you will have to pay all of your care allowance towards the cost of your care charges, the amount you will pay depends on the level of care needs you have as shown below:
- Low Rate - £23.20.
- Middle Rate - £58.70.
- Higher Rate - £87.65.
If you have savings or capital over £28,000, then you will pay the full charge per week.
If you do not have savings or capital over £28,000, then you will pay the Care Allowance only (£23.20, £58.70, or £87.65).
The Care Manager is required to have proof of income, savings and capital held. You should therefore have available for inspection any pension or benefit statements, and bank or savings books relating to your financial affairs.
