Selection Criteria for Orkney’s Sporting Hall of Fame
Sporting Hall of Fame - Sporting Champions
1.1 Introduction
Nominees to Orkney’s Sporting Hall of Fame (OSHoF) will have achieved a high level in their chosen sport and have been an inspiration or positive role model.
It is expected that those athletes will have contributed significantly to their chosen sport within the County and will have promoted Orkney as part of their sporting and/or representative commitments.
1.2 Selection Criteria
To be eligible for selection into the OSHoF, the following criteria applies:
Athlete
- a) the nominee must have represented Orkney or equivalent in a team or as an individual at a Senior or open level
- b) the selected athlete must have been born in Orkney or have participated in sport in Orkney for at least 5 years
- c) it is essential that nominations for athletes be supported by their local sports club/association (where there is a local sporting body/association), or in the absence of such a local association, by the authority or governing body
- d) nominees shall be considered when:
- i) They have retired/completed their highest level of competition
- ii) the performance of a particularly outstanding athletic achievement that warrants special recognition (E.g. winner of a Commonwealth medal, setting an international record)
Volunteer
To be eligible for selection as a volunteer, the following criteria applies:
- a) long and meritorious service to their sport along with significant achievement in their sport. Achievement arising from personal effort or initiative is essential.
and/or
- b) represented their sport as an administrator, coach, manager or other support role to an Orkney Junior or Open side.
- c) it is essential that nominations be supported by their local sporting association (where there is a local sporting body/association), or in the absence of such a local association, by the county or national association.
- d) recognised as an integral part of the development of the sport within the county.
- e) a select number of candidates under the following categories: coach, technical official, referee, volunteer or photographer etc. will be admitted.
Additional Information
- f) In considering nominees, such as those from an earlier era, who had limited opportunity to compete at an elite level, the OSHoF Panel shall give due weight to the opinions of:
- i) the nominee’s sporting peers (e.g. fellow competitors from the same earlier era).
- ii) clubs/associations and/or professional sporting bodies providing those opinions have been recorded (i.e. letters, tapes, video, newspapers etc.) and authenticated.
- g) The OSHOF Panel will consider in addition to a nominee's individual achievements, that person's integrity, sportsmanship and character.
- h) The decision of the panel shall be final. No appeal can be made against those decisions nor shall any correspondence be entered.
