Betty Stanger
A lifelong sportswoman, Betty represented Orkney at Junior level in netball, hockey, badminton, and athletics. At Senior level she continued to represent Orkney in netball and hockey, eventually adding squash to the list.
Betty started playing squash in the 1990s and, like the many sports she played before, she was committed to being the best player she could be. A regular at the Hatston Squash Courts, she showed determination and diligence in honing her skills and was a keen competitor at ladies’ night and in the winter leagues.
Between 1992 and 2019 Betty won the 15-minute handicap competitions on 5 occasions, Kirkwall Open Championships 11 times and Orkney Ladies Squash Championship 15 times. She currently holds the record for winning the Orkney Ladies Championship more than any other player, having won 14 titles between 2000 and 2015, she came out of retirement in 2019 to compete once more and won her 15th title.
Betty has represented Orkney multiple times in inter-county competitions against Shetland and Caithness, both at home and away. She played in the number one spot on the ladies’ team for many years and retired in 2015 from this position. Betty also represented Orkney at the Inter-Island Games in Shetland 2005. She competed strongly and finished the competition in 11th place.
Betty also continued her support of Squash by coaching beginners and junior players and helping secure the future of the club. She has also supported the running of the club as a member of the committee, taking on the President’s role from 2003 to 2007.
