Bikeability
Bikeability Scotland is the modern day cycling proficiency and consists of three levels of training: Bikeability 1, 2 and 3.
- Level 1 teaches children the basic skills of riding a bike, such as balance, control and making turns. It is usually delivered to children in Primary 5, and takes place in the playground.
- Level 2 teaches children how to ride a bike safely on the road and navigate basic junctions, it is usually delivered to children in Primary 6 and takes place on quiet roads.
- Level 3 teaches children how to navigate more complex junctions and plan journeys effectively.
The Active Schools Coordinators are Bikeability tutors who work closely with the Road Safety Officer and provide training for volunteers/teachers who would like to do their Cycle Trainer Assistant course. As well as being tutors we can also mentor the volunteers once they have done their training.
Bikeability is run by Cycling Scotland in partnership with Orkney Islands Council. These sessions rely mainly on volunteers to help deliver them to school children in Orkney. If there is anyone who would be willing to help with these sessions please contact Yvonne Scott.
We also deliver Bikeability as well as training. This year as part of our summer holiday programme 2017, we delivered Bikeability Level 1 to pupils moving into P6 after the holidays. This two day course enabled the pupils to improve their basic bike riding skills from doing simple bike checks, braking, cornering, pedaling to balance and control ensuring they are ready to go on to do Level 2 in P6 at school.
