World War 1 commemorations - 2018
A new review, available in the ‘Related Downloads’ section of this page describes the many memorable and poignant events held in Orkney to mark the centenary of the Armistice.
11 November 2018 - Armistice
November 11, 2018 marks the centenary of the armistice that brought to an end the hostilities of the Great War. In Orkney, like numerous towns and cities across the UK this will have been met with much fanfare whilst the full and true scale of devastation and lives lost began to sink in. Orkney will come together again on Remembrance Sunday, with these same towns and cities, to mark the centenary of the armistice and remember all those lives lost during the Great War and later conflicts.
Orkney Islands Council is working with partners and organisations to produce a full programme of activity for Sunday 11 November. Please check back for the programme which will be published shortly.
