The Arts are a career for Artists and being paid appropriately and justly is your right as Artists.  This snapshot of recommended minimum levels of pay is a way to support you to gauge fee charges structures when you are negotiating pay with external organisations.  Don’t be shy to charge your worth, Artists have to eat too!

Theatre:

  • ITC rates can be found at: www.itc-arts.org/rates-of-pay/
  • ITC recommend the following:  Performers and stage managers £494 a week, although they don’t recommend hours or overtime listed.  They also detail commuting and meal costs.

Directors

  • Preparatory Fee: Full length play - £1,614.30
  • Preparatory Fee: Short play - £1,117.00
  • Rehearsals: Weekly payment - £494.00
  • Artistic/ Resident Directors: Weekly pay for all duties - £599.90

Writers

  • Full length play £9,176.00
  • Play under 70 minutes in length £6,110.00
  • Play under 30 minutes in length £3,056.00
  • Minimum royalty £62.10
  • Royalty threshold £61,807.00

Designers

  • Design fee £2,704.70
  • Making weekly fee for building set and other duties £529.90

Choreographers

  • Preparation and up to 2 weeks’ rehearsal minimum fee £1,994.40
  • More than 2 weeks’ rehearsal weekly fee £494.00
  • More than 2 weeks’ rehearsal daily rate £160.50
  • Session rate (max 3 hours) £103.20

Equity keep their rates private for members only, however, here are some insights:

Performers on an indie film daily minimums:

  • Daily £144
  • Weekly £576
  • Holiday Pay £16.22

Voice Over

  • Linear recordings irrespective of the platform
  • Minimum fee £214 half day session
  • Minimum fee £357 full day session

Equity expect you to negotiate your own fees.

Hourly Rates:

  • £25.50 per hour for a new graduate
  • £33.00 per hour for an artist with +3 years’ experience
  • £41.00 per hour for an artist with +5 years’ experience

Sessional Rates:

New Graduate Artist

  • £102.00 4-hour minimum call
  • £204.00 8-hour day rate

3+ Years’ Experience

  • £132.00 4-hour minimum call
  • £264.00 8-hour day rate

5+ Years’ Experience

  • £164.00 4-hour minimum call
  • £328.00 8-hour day rate

Day rates are based on an 8hr day.  Minimum ‘call’ is a 4hr session.  Additional hours over 8hrs should be a minimum of the hourly rate. Recommended for additional hrs Rate of pay x1.5 for additional hours or Rate of Pay x2 for out of normal hours/weekends/holidays.
