Culture Fund 2024-2025: Hoy Heritage Centre (Friends of Hoy Kirk)
Date: 4th March 2025
Time: 12:00 to 12:00
The fund enabled us to but the artwork 'Hoy & Walls Parish Map' a diptych by artist Sarah McFadyen.
The artwork takes central place in the heritage centre and has been well received by locals and visitors alike. The artwork has brought the room together and gives a focal point for the rest of the collection to connect with.
There was a strong local feeling that the paintings should remain at the kirk following their temporary exhibition. It reinforced our connections with the community when we were able to respond to that and secure the artworks for the future. It has underscored the ownership felt locally over the heritage centre.
The artwork appeals to both visitors and locals however it has a special significance for islanders and embodies a feeling of pride in the island. The nuanced depiction of the island, and the fact it was made in consultation with islanders by an artist from the island, has made this piece of art highly valued in the community.
The work is important for our organisation in its work with the community as it brings together both ends of the island.
