Taxi Fare Setting
Taxis in Orkney must be fitted with a taximeter and adhere to the Scale of Taxi Fares. Private hire cars may also fit taximeters, if they wish and, if they do so, they must also adhere to the maximum scales. Further information is available from the 'Related Downloads' section of this page.
Review of Taxi Fares and Charges
The Council is required to review taxi fares and charges at intervals not exceeding 18 months, but in fact carries out the review annually. The Council is required to consult persons or organisations appearing to represent taxi operators and to give public notice of proposals, stating that it shall take into account any representations submitted in writing within a period of one month from the date of first publication of the notice. It must also notify the consultees of the outcome of the review. Taxi operators have a right of appeal to the Scottish Traffic Commissioner within 14 days of any decision on scales or the outcome of any review and, whilst any appeal is ongoing, the decision does not have any effect.
