Activities
We provide or promote a wide range of activities with an emphasis on an active and healthy lifestyle. As part of the admissions process we will solicit from students, information on their hobbies and pastimes with a view to promoting and encouraging an active lifestyle.
We hold information on a wide range of activity groups within the community on everything from sports, drama and music, not to mention church groups and youth groups through to specialist activities like fishing and jewellery making.
To this end we hold an annual “Transitions Day” wherein we invite all manner of clubs and societies to the halls to meet with students to promote their organisations. This encompasses information and presentations on everything from martial arts to dance, indoor bowling to kayaking and athletics to swimming.
Within the halls itself we have pool tables, darts, table top football, table tennis, a comprehensive range of board games and electronic games which are available to everyone. Competitions are held and trophies presented in a wide range of activities.
Students can access reduced price swimming sessions at the Pickaquoy Centre and sports taster sessions are also organised.
Art activities are put on in the multipurpose dining room and only recently through the Scapa Flow Partnership we were involved in a project to promote traditional activities such as creel and net making to silver jewellery.
Television lounges are also on site as well as first class IT facilities, please see our facilities page.
Charity events such as quiz nights for the BBC’s Children in Need are held as are fundraising activities organised by students for students to raise funds for equipment such as a Nintendo Wii.
Students are encouraged to grow and develop as individuals and we encourage all to take a full part in hostel life and some do this by helping out with our Student Council or Food Committee for example and some work actively with our Resident Participation Officer.
The provision of a private garden and allotment at the request of students has enabled a gardening project to be set up which promotes, healthy living is educational, promotes teamwork and of course provides both delicious produce to enhance the students’ dining experience but also provides plants and flowers to enhance the living environment.
