Citizens Advice has launched a comparison tool that looks at every available tariff for your postcode. You can consider if you are overpaying for electricity and switch to a different tariff and/or energy supplier.

Winter Fuel Payment

If you were born before 25 September 1957 you could get between £250 and £600 to help you pay your heating bills. This is known as a ‘Winter Fuel Payment’.

Most people will receive the Winter Fuel Payment automatically if eligible.  Full details, including eligibility criteria, can be found from the 'Related Sites' section of this page.

Should you need to make a claim, the deadline for winter 2023 to 2024 is 31 March 2024.

Cold Weather Payment

The Cold Weather Payment is paid when the outside temperature is zero degrees Celsius or below for seven days in a row; between 1 November 2023 and 31 March 2024.

For each 7-day period that the average temperature has dropped to these levels (or is forecast to drop to these levels) you’ll receive £25.

Warm Home Discount

By law, larger energy suppliers are required to help vulnerable customers pay for their energy. Those who are eligible could receive a £150 rebate on their winter 2023 to 2024 electricity bill.

Help with arrears from your Energy Supplier

As well as grants to make your home more energy efficient, some utility companies also offer help if you have large arrears on your bill or even help with payments towards white goods or boiler replacements.
