Food Regulations and Inspections
Food Regulations
Food legislation places an obligation on food business operators to ensure that all their activities are carried out in a hygienic way and makes it an offence to supply food which is unsafe or harmful to human health. Environmental Health is responsible for ensuring that businesses comply with these requirements.
Food Premises Inspection
The Environmental Health team carries out regular unannounced inspections of all food businesses to ensure the public are protected, local businesses are supported and that legal standards of compliance are maintained.
Inspection Schedule
Inspections take place on a frequency determined by the perceived risk in each premises and ensure that risks have been identified, staff are adequately trained and the condition and cleanliness of the premises meets required standards.
The Council uses the Official Control Verification techniques (OCV) as instructed by Food Standards Scotland and our Inspectors will apply these when inspecting “approved” and certain manufacturing premises. The OCV system of inspection is longer and has a more detailed analysis of food safety management control systems and is considered proportionate to the risks posed by such establishments.
