Why is this happening?

BT Openreach announced in 2017 that the current copper/analogue lines will be switched off by the end of 2025. The Telephone Exchange Equipment that we use today was last upgraded in the 1980s and is now at its end of life. Over the last 5 years, Openreach have been slowly upgrading the network and installing glass fibre lines to replace the old copper network.

In some areas the fibre lines run all the way from the customers premises to the Telephone Exchange Building, but for many users in Orkney , the fibre runs to green street cabinets from a Telephone Exchange and then the existing copper line remains in place, back to the premises.
