DUAL Ports

The DUAL Ports partners aim to decarbonise Regional Entrepreneurial Ports (REPs) through a shared eco-innovation port programme that minimises the environmental footprint and promote sustainability.

Project pilots include:

  • Building up business case for alternative, non-conventional energy sources systems (e.g. Liquefied Natural Gas/hydrogen and a sailcargo trading network through port facilities eco-adaptation).
  • Testing environmentally friendly equipment in ports (intelligent lightning network).
  • Piloting new way of sustainably managing port environment (soil treatment; sustainable space use through co-siting/dockland).
  • Sharing technology/processes/plans for resource efficient management (green officer plus sustainability management system).
  • Sharing resources for low carbon management and processes in ports (low carbon planning and management).

Project partners include:

  • Port of Oostende, Business Vordingborg, Port of Vordingborg, Municipality of Guldborgsund, Orkney Islands Council Marine Services, ITM power, Fair winds trust, port of Zwolle, Hamburgisches Welt-WirtschftsInstitut (HWWI), Niedersachsen Ports GmbH & Co. KG Branch Emden.

Orkney Islands Council are a member of the Key pilot working group responsible for the ‘HYDROGEN – use in ports and connected areas ‘ aspect of the DUAL Ports project which allows for the facilitation of the design of a hydrogen bunkering system and implementation in Orkney resulting in the design for a hydrogen ferry refueller.

DUAL Ports - Developing Low carbon Utilities, Abilities and potential of regional entrepreneurial Ports (10/11/2015 - 30/06/2019) is a €5,2m project, 50% co-funded by the European Union and the European Regional Development Fund through the Interreg North Sea Region Programme 2014 to 2020, Eco-innovation priority.
