Renewables
It is generally acknowledged that Orkney’s natural environment offers significant potential for the generation of electricity from renewable sources, particularly wind, wave and tidal stream. In recognising Orkney’s potential, a significant new industry has begun to emerge within the county.
Renewable energy currently offers Orkney a critical, but time-limited opportunity to develop a world leading industry which could offer the area significant long-term and sustainable economic and social benefits. The Council is driving forward initiatives to:
-
Secure sustainable, high value employment in manufacturing, research, demonstration and the supply chain.
-
Support meaningful income generation from community-owned projects.
-
Support ongoing fossil generation replacement and C02 reductions.
