About the Service
Orkney Islands Council has a team of 14 dedicated School Crossing Patrol Officers (SCPO) who help children to cross the roads safely on their way to and from school. The majority are based in Kirkwall, with three in Stromness and one at Firth Primary School.
Information for Parents
Although we provide school crossing patrols, parents are still responsible for ensuring that their children make it to school safely. Remember, if you are crossing with your child at a patrol site:
- Wait on the pavement behind the SCPO.
- Do not follow the SCPO out into the road.
- Only cross when the SCPO tells you it is safe to do so.
Information for Drivers
Please remember, if you are approaching a patrol site:
- Be aware of your speed.
- Slow down and be ready to stop.
- Stop when the SCPO tells you to.
- Wait patiently until all pedestrians are off the road.
