Fast track to Construction

Short course at UHI Orkney starting February 2025

Would you like to be part of Orkney’s building and construction scene – but worried you don’t have the right skills and experience, or not sure what’s involved? This small group short course is for you!

Orkney Islands Council’s Employability team has worked with UHI Orkney to create a six week course providing the entry-level construction skills needed by employers, and opportunities for work experience with local building firms.

The course:

  • Is free for eligible individuals
  • Is timed to fit within the school day
  • Includes lots of hand-on practical sessions in the UHI Orkney workshops
  • Includes help setting up work experience and CVs

Classes and site visits will take place weekdays between 10am and 2:30pm.

Skills and topics covered:

  • Machine driving and plant operation
  • Joinery and furniture making
  • Drystone walling
  • Construction site safety and core skills
  • CV, interview and career advice

The programme will run from 24 February 2025 to 4 April 2025, in a small group of learners up to a maximum of 8 people.
