    Abandoned vehicle warning

    People in Orkney are being warned about the repercussions of abandoning vehicles across the county.

    It is an offence to abandon a vehicle and the Council has powers to deal with this unsightly problem. While local authorities may remove and dispose of vehicles that have been abandoned in their area, they will and do recharge the registered keeper – so it’s also vital that folk remember to ensure the keeper details are kept up to date.

    Dog owners reminded to keep their dogs under control when near livestock – or face much stiffer penalties thanks to new legislation

    OIC are backing a campaign that got underway this week focusing on tougher new livestock worrying legislation and encouraging responsible dog ownership.

    Police Scotland and NFU Scotland have launched the Livestock Attack and Distress campaign centred on the new legislation, which includes fines of up to £40,000 and prison sentences.

    Stromness Academy DoE outdoor programme £20k grant

    Stromness Academy has been awarded just under £20,000 to support its Duke of Edinburgh outdoor education programme from the Scottish Government’s Healthy Islands Fund.

    One of 15 community projects in Orkney to receive a share of around £422,000, the grant will be used to provide expedition equipment and staff training.  Purchases will include outdoor sleeping, walking and cooking equipment, waterproofs and safety items and staff leading the programme will be able to gain ‘Wilderness Leader’ and first aid qualifications.

    Detailed plans in place for prelim exams

    The COVID-19 pandemic has led to the significant disruption to learning, including the cancellation and extensive modifications to exams in 2020 and 2021.

    The Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) have however been planning for National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher exams to be held in spring 2022, the first since 2019. Course content has been modified to take account of the disruption to learning that young people have experienced, and teaching staff in Orkney’s Secondary and Junior High Schools have detailed plans in place, to allow student to sit the exams, based on Public Health guidance.

    There was no gold, frankincense or myrrh for the residents of Eunson Kloss this Christmas - the wise folks at Scottish Sea Farms knew an edible gift would be much more appreciated!

    The folk at the Council’s adult supported accommodation were treated to not just one but two salmon thanks to a donation from the company.
