  • Temporary Closure of part of Scapa Bay Road, St Ola (B9053) for Orkney Rowing Club Event

    Notice is hereby given that Orkney Islands Council has made an order in terms of section 62 of the Roads (Scotland) Act 1984 to ensure the safety of the public and road users while the Orkney Rowing Club hold an event.

    The order will be in operation on Saturday 17 June 2023 between the hours of 07:45 and 19:30, and the effect of the Order will be to close Scapa Bay Road (B9053), St Ola, from its junction with the B9148 to the access to Scapa Haven, St Ola, between the hours stated. Traffic signs will be erected to indicate when the road is closed.

  • Temporary Closure of Roads in Kirkwall for Saint Magnus Marathon Event

    Notice is hereby given that Orkney Islands Council has made an order in terms of section 62 of the Roads (Scotland) Act 1984 to ensure the safety of the public and road users during the Saint Magnus Marathon event.

    The order will be in operation on Sunday 2 July 2023 between the hours of 7.30am and 11am and its effect will be to close (1) Albert Street, Kirkwall; (2) Bridge Street, Kirkwall; (3) Broad Street, Kirkwall (from Albert Street to Palace Road); and (4) Castle Street, Kirkwall (from car park exit to Broad Street). Traffic signs will be erected to indicate when a road is closed.

  • Temporary Closure of Roads in Finstown for Firth Gala Day Fancy Dress Parade

    Notice is hereby given that Orkney Islands Council has made an order in terms of section 62 of the Roads (Scotland) Act 1984 to the effect that, between the hours of 19:15 and 20:30 on Saturday 17 June 2023, in connection with the Firth Gala Day Fancy Dress Parade, vehicular traffic using the roads specified in the Schedule hereto will be subject to delays and a speed restriction, and parking in these roads will not be permitted.

  • Save the date - free online gambling awareness event - “Bet you can help!”

    A date has been set for a free online gambling awareness event for professionals, support groups and criminal justice practitioners in Orkney looking to learn more about gambling related harm.

    The Orkney Community Justice Partnership, in conjunction with the RCA Trust, which provides community-based alcohol and gambling related prevention and treatment services in Scotland, will host the one-hour online event to professionals across the north region on Saturday 10 June 2023 at 1.30pm.

  • Stronsay Junior High in the running for most enterprising school title

    Stronsay Junior High School has been shortlisted as one of Scotland’s most enterprising schools.

    The results will be announced at the Young Enterprise Scotland ‘Festival of Youth Enterprise’. The event runs 30-31 May at Hampden Park, Glasgow with a Marketplace of partner organisations to support young people, and workshops for educators.

    The school, which has a roll of 45 from nursery up to S4, embraces some innovative practice and a collaborative way of learning that compliments the island’s remote and rural location.

  • Harbours action plan improvements well underway – but staffing remains a challenge

    Work is well underway to address issues raised in a recent safety audit of operations at Orkney’s harbours – but lack of staff to carry out this important work continues to present challenges.

    Members at today’s (23 May 2023) meeting of Orkney Islands Council’s Harbours sub-committee heard that a 27 point action plan is being worked through to address the issues raised.

    The action plan follows on from a recent Port Marine Safety Code audit, carried out in November last year, which recommended that a number of pieces of work should be carried out by Marine Services in order to improve upon safe practices within Orkney’s piers and harbours.

  • Moving on Up!

    The Council’s Pupil Engagement Team and Papdale Parent Council are planning a free pop-up event supporting pupils moving up to Kirkwall Grammar School.

    They are appealing for anyone with KGS uniform clothes – including hoodies, t-shirts, shirts and ties – pre-worn, nearly new or even unworn, to drop them off at the Papdale Primary School Office during school hours throughout May.
