  • Businesses warned to be alert to new banking telephone scam

    The Council’s Trading Standards Team is advising of a banking telephone scam reported to be targeting businesses in particular.

    The fraudsters are using new approaches in an attempt to catch businesses off guard. They will call claiming to be a member of bank staff, indicating that there’s been suspicious transactions appearing on your business account. They’ll claim to be calling to make sure that any fraudulent transactions don’t go through.

    Divers working with Orkney’s Scapa Flow Museum have captured some amazing underwater imagery this weekend of two First World War wrecks, both widely regarded as among the UK’s most significant naval losses.

  • Aurrida – dressed for success!

    Staff from Aurrida House were dressed for success during a fundraiser at the weekend, which has raised almost £2,500 - five times their original target of £500!

    The sun shone on Saturday as the group of around 35 staff, children and young people and their families donned an array of costumes for the sponsored walk and run at the Pickaquoy Centre track to raise funds for the Aurrida Comfort Fund.

    There was a lady bird, butterfly, bees, Pink Ladies, Sherlock Holmes, Spider Man, Rapunzel, Elsa from Frozen, Cruella Deville, a cute dalmatian puppy, a werewolf and a family of flower power hippies!

    Notice is hereby given under Regulation 9 (1) of the Local Authority Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2014 that:

    Copies of the unaudited accounts of Orkney Integration Joint Board for the period from 1 April 2022 to 31 March 2023 will be available for public inspection in the Council Offices, School Place, Kirkwall between the hours of 10:00 to 13:00 and 14.00 to 16.00 Monday to Friday, from 1 July 2023 to 21 July 2023, both dates inclusive. A copy of the accounts will also be available at the following website: www.orkney.gov.uk

  • St Magnus Café – reduced opening hours

    We know how you value the service at the Kirkwall Community Centre’s St Magnus Café, but from today, 12 June, until Wednesday 28 June, the café will be operating reduced hours.

    The café will be open from 10am until 2pm most days during this period, however, it will have to close in full on Monday 19 and Tuesday 20 June due to insufficient staff cover.

  • Lidar surveys take to Orkney’s skies

    Those admiring Orkney's beautiful big blue skies over the last few days might have spotted a low flying plane carrying out important survey work for Orkney Islands Council.

    The aircraft has been undertaking Lidar surveys of Orkney's coastline - providing the Council's Engineering team with vital data on potential coastal erosion and flooding issues.

  • Tour guiding and TV stars – Sanday School students share the inside story on their island’s heritage!

    A number of students at Sanday Junior High School have been given a taste of life as a tour guide and the film industry as part of a project to give them, and others, a better understanding of the island’s heritage.

    S1 – S3 pupils have teamed up with Stromness-based film maker, Mark Jenkins, as part of an education and learning project funded and run by the North Isles Landscape Partnership Scheme (NILPS).
