  • Hup Show drive a success – but more candidates still needed

    The Community Councils team would like to say a huge thanks to folk in South Ronaldsay and Burray who stopped by at the Hup Show with an interest in standing to represent the area in the upcoming community council elections.

    The South Ronaldsay and Burray community council area – one of 20 around Orkney – has been without a community council for a year and to help instigate change and improvement, it’s important to have that presence.

  • Sanday paddle “invigorating” Smiddybrae resident says!

    Staff at Smiddybrae House continue to go above and beyond to make the time residents spend there special!

    During July, seven residents enjoyed a day trip to Sanday – only made possible by two members of staff coming in as volunteers to ensure it could go ahead.

  • Age is no barrier to learning something new and enjoying life!

    That was certainly the case for a number of our supported older folk in the West Mainland thanks to collaborative working with the Orkney West Mainland Flower Produce and Industrial Show.

    A new category for assisted entries was created by the committee where people who have home care, live in sheltered housing, go to the West Mainland Day Centre or live in Hamnavoe House or Smiddybrae House can enter the show.

  • Road works update for week of Monday 14 August 2023

    A summing up of road works underway or soon to start in the county - for week starting Monday 14 August 2023.

    A965, Finstown - resurfacing work on the A965 in Finstown (between the junction with Heddle Road and Baikie’s Stores) will be restarting on Monday 14 August on phase 3 of the works (from the Finstown Post Office to Grandon Road) with works expected to finish mid-September. This will see a return of temporary traffic lights to the area.

  • The Orkney Islands Council (The Meadows, Kirkwall, County Show) (Temporary Closure) Order 2023

    Orkney Islands Council has made the above-named Order under Section 62 of the Roads (Scotland) Act 1984 to ensure the safety of the public and road users during Orkney Agricultural Society’s running of the annual County Show.

    The Order will be in operation on Saturday, 12 August 2022, between the hours of 00:01 and 23.30. The effect of the Order will be:

    (1) to close The Meadows, Kirkwall, between its junction with Meadow Drive and Meadow Park from 08:00 to 17:00; and (2) to prohibit waiting at any time in a road specified in the Schedule hereto.

  • Orkney SQA results compared to national attainment

    SQA results were received by pupils across Orkney on Tuesday 8 August and the Orkney pass rates for National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher were released.

  • SQA results day 2023

    Pupils across Orkney are today (Tuesday 8 August) receiving their examination results from the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA).

    Students who signed up for the SQA’s text or email results service should have received their results between 08:00 and 09:00 today, with results on paper delivered by First Class post throughout the day.

  • Free County Show shuttle bus

    Stagecoach is sponsoring the Orkney Agricultural Society by proving a free shuttle bus to and from the County Show, as part of a park and ride service from Orkney Auction Mart.

    The first shuttle bus will be leaving at 8.30am from the Orkney Auction Mart car park stopping at the Tesco bus stop and then onto the bottom gate on the Meadows Road.
