Orkney Islands Council’s Trading Standards team is reminding bird keepers of new UK-wide legislation coming into force soon which requires all keepers of outdoor birds - even single pets - to register their birds.

Described as a “shooting sensation” by her peers, Orkney netballer Zara Flett has received national recognition for her dedication to the sport whilst continuing her studies. 

A group of residents from the Council-run Hamnavoe House in Stromness enjoyed a trip back in time to the Scapa Flow Museum recently. 

Staff at the Council’s Sunnybrae Centre Housing Support Service have been described by Care Inspectorate inspectors as “dedicated and compassionate” showing the people they cared for “dignity and respect”. 

Local folk are being urged to submit stories and writing showcasing island life for a special public arts project created by the Council and centred on island identity, as the county prepares for visitors from around the world during the Orkney 2025 International Island Games.

Partnership working between teams at Orkney Islands Council and BT helped deliver a successful Roadshow event at the Orkney Library & Archive communicating key messages to more than 200 folk ahead of the 2027 digital switchover.

5 memorials, co-designed by artists and local community members, are being brought to life across the archipelago as part of Remembering Together, a national project to honour those lost to COVID in the region and provide a community place for reflection.
