  • Sarah, 10, goes the extra 100 miles for children’s cancer charity!

    Our superstar student, Sarah Seatter, walked 100 miles during the summer holidays to raise money for a children’s cancer charity.

    The Papdale Primary School P7 pupil also braved the chop last week, donating a whopping 16 inches of hair to the Little Princess Trust who make wigs for children who have lost their hair.

  • Learning to teach during a pandemic - Hazel Pinner

    Hazel Pinner is in her 4th year of primary teaching and moved to Orkney in August 2019, just eight months before the first UK lockdown.

    Her path into teaching was also a little convoluted despite this being a childhood dream and having been inspired into the profession by a number of primary and secondary teachers, whom she is proud call friends to this day.

    Anna Jusinska, 29, has found the support network for teachers very visible in Orkney – despite the challenges of restrictions.

    Originally from Poland, Anna, 29, graduated from the University of Glasgow with an MA in Theatre Studies, but English language and literature remained her passion and she wanted to turn this into a career.

    Staff at St Rognvald House are hosting their very own “Peedie County Show Day” for residents and their families on Saturday 21 August.

    With all but the Sanday Show cancelled this year again due to the pandemic, Manager Shirley Miller said they have decided that the show will go on!

  • New public bus contract gets underway – folk asked to check timetables ahead of travelling

    With Orkney’s new public bus contract to start today Monday, 16 August, folk are being reminded to check the timetables ahead of travelling due to slight alterations.

  • Orkney youngsters pedal power through cycle training!

    Thanks to Cycling Scotland funding, the Council’s Active Schools team, with support from Yvonne Scott from the OIC’s Road Safety Team, Alex Clarke from Cycle Orkney and trained volunteers, they were able to deliver the successful Bikeability Scotland training programme for school children. The scheme is designed to give young folk the skills and confidence to ride their bikes on today’s roads.
