West Pier in Stronsay Closed

A section of the West Pier in Stronsay – known locally as ‘the fisherman’s pier’ - will be closed from early next week following concerns raised after a recent inspection.
The end 30m of the 150m pier is made up of three concrete sections and there is evidence that the joints between these sections are opening up.
An underwater assessment is due to be carried out to further assess and establish the structural viability of the pier – with the section closed off in the meantime as a precaution.
Ferry services to and from Stronsay will be unaffected by the closure as it is the East pier which is used for ferries
The pier was constructed in the early 20th century. Regular inspections are carried out by the Council as part of an ongoing programme of works across the piers and harbours estate.
James Buck is the Head of Marine Services and Transportation and the Council’s Harbourmaster. He said: “The closure is purely precautionary at this stage whilst we assess the situation. Once further assessments have taken place we will identify any remedial works required. We’ll keep the community informed as we progress work.”
