Tugs poll closes soon

Date: 20 November 2019

Time: 11:44

Orkney Islands Council has issued a reminder that people under a week left to help choose names for the county's two new tugs.

Votes can be cast in an online poll for one of four groups, each containing three names.

Two would be given to the new tugs, which are currently under construction. These will replace two of the three tugs currently operated by the OIC Marine Services. The other would be held in reserve in case the Council decides at a later date to replace the third tug as well.

The poll closes on Tuesday 26 November. A winner will be drawn from the votes for the most popular group of names, invited to take part in the naming ceremony and offered the opportunity of a family trip aboard one of the new tugs.

The names put forward by tug crews and other marine services staff are:

  • Group one – Odin, Thor and Vale.
  • Group two - St Magnus, St Rognvald and St Margaret.
  • Group three – Havard, Hlodvir and Haakon.
  • Group four – Vidar, Ragnhild and Solveig.
