Travel with confidence with Thistle Assistance initiative
Date: 12 December 2024
Time: 12:00
The Council is supporting the Thistle Assistance travel initiative – developed by Transport Scotland, Disability Equality Scotland and the Scottish Government.
Staff at OIC have contacted transport providers in the county to encourage their participation in the initiative and Loganair Ltd, NorthLink Ferries, Orkney Ferries Ltd, Pentland Ferries and Stagecoach are all on board.
The initiative aims to increase the accessibility of public transport whilst improving the journey experience for anyone who needs extra assistance while travelling.
A Thistle Assistance app has been set up and a card, which doesn't require a photo, is available. These are free to use and cover a range of disabilities and impairments, whether you have a disability, temporary mobility issue, or are pregnant for example.
The card or app, which are recognised by most public transport operators across Scotland, lets transport staff know in an easy and subtle way what extra assistance you require.
You may like more time to get to your seat. You may prefer your driver to speak more slowly and clearly.
Simply show your personalised card or app to staff, and they will understand what extra help you need.
