Temporary closure of Shore Street car park

Date: 16 May 2017

Time: 10:23

Orkney Islands Council is advising of a temporary closure of its Shore Street car park (also known as the Waterfront East car park) for a period of around 10 weeks, starting 1 June.

The closure is to enable construction of the next stage of the Kirkwall Flood Prevention Scheme, around the Kirkwall Pier entrance and the Shore Street car park.

During this phase there will be alternative access to the Kirkwall Pier. The Shore Street car park is needed to provide a temporary exit from the pier.

Head of Infrastructure, Darren Richardson, said: “A number of options have been discussed with our Roads and Marine Services teams and the contractors involved.

“This option avoids the need for temporary traffic lights in the area.

"We want to keep traffic flowing as much as possible, particularly with the ambulance station based nearby.

“It will involve some inconvenience for some people for a period of time.

“We apologise in advance for this and ask drivers for their cooperation.”

Alternative parking is available at Great Western Road (South) with 208 spaces and Waterfront (West) – opposite the Ayre Hotel - 52 spaces.

Mr Richardson added: “While there is construction going on we will also take the opportunity to create two disabled parking spaces in the Shore Street car park.”
