Stromness folk thanked for their ‘Sooth End’ views - and still time to have your say

Local people are being thanked for their views on the future of the South End of Stromness, as the Council continues its eight week consultation into a development brief for the area.
Almost 80 people attended the Council’s drop-in sessions over three days recently where folk could view proposed development guidelines for ‘the Sooth End’ and talk them through with officers from OIC’s Development and Marine Planning team.
The Stromness South End Development Brief is aimed at setting out a vision to shape future development, so that it works alongside the unique landscape, heritage and community of the area. It also aims to clearly convey to landowners and developers what will be expected of future development in the area, support healthy living and active travel, and enable a range of housing types.
Charlotte Savage is Urban Design Planner with the Council and has been at the drop-ins:
“We’re really appreciative of the community response so far, and the time folk have already given to this consultation. We’ve had lots of detailed discussion and comments which will also be useful as we start the process of reviewing the wider Local Development Plan for the whole of Orkney.
“What has really shone through is that people want to see future development contribute to and protect the character and beauty of the Sooth End as a place where people want to live and work, and that they can thrive in.
“There’s still time for folk to have their say – the consultation closes on 20 September so we’d urge people to take a look at the draft development brief and feed back any comments before then.”
The Draft Stromness South End Development Brief can be downloaded from the Council website at www.orkney.gov.uk/StromnessSouth and a paper copy can be viewed at the Warehouse Buildings in Stromness.
