Stromness Community Council Election of new members

Date: 16 September 2024

Time: 01:00

Nominations For Stromness Community Council Socials

Folk in Stromness are being advised there will be a public meeting on Monday 30 September to elect new members onto the community council.

There are currently three vacancies.

Community councils play a vital role in conveying the unique needs and ambitions of Orkney’s communities to decision makers, including Orkney Islands Council.

They generally meet four times per year to feed back on consultations from a wide range of organisations, arrange services for their community, and to consider or develop funding requests in relation to their local area.

Karen Greaves is OIC Corporate Director, Strategy, Performance and Business Solutions:

“Being a community councillor is a great way to champion your community. It’s an interesting but very rewarding role. Having more members on the Stromness Community Council will ensure widespread representation for the community and spread any work amongst more folk.

If you have a passion for Stromness and live in the parish, I’d urge you to put your name forward.”

Locals interested in serving on the community council can either attend the meeting in person, or, if they’re unable to attend in person they can put in writing their willingness to stand to Orkney Islands Council, addressed to the Community Councils team.

If more than three people nominate themselves (either in writing or in person) to stand as Community Councillors on 30 September, a voting process will be triggered at the meeting, with the new members elected on the night

Only individuals entered on the current Register of Electors for the Stromness Community Council area as at 1 September 2024 can stand as a candidate and can propose, second and vote for a candidate. Anyone interested in standing but unsure of their status on the electoral roll should contact the Orkney Electoral Registration Office at 8 Broad Street, Kirkwall - phone 01856876222 or send an email to ero@orkney.gov.uk.

For more information on the role of a community councillor or the process for election, contact the Council’s Democratic Services team on 01856 873535 ext 2264 or email communitycouncils@orkney.gov.uk

The meeting will take place at 7.00pm in the John Rae Room of the Warehouse Buildings on Monday 30 September
