The Stenness Community School are proud to become the second school in Orkney to be awarded “Reading School” status by the Scottish Book Trust.
The successful Reading Schools programme supports schools to build a reading culture where every pupil is encouraged to feed their imagination through books.
Anna Derricourt from the Scottish Book Trust presented the trophy and certificate to the school recently.
Anna said: “The huge amount of work and dedication you have put into the programme really shone through your application and, on our visit, we clearly saw a school who has embraced the approach of reading for pleasure - what an incredible reading environment for your learners.”
Principal Teacher, Vickie Leonard, said: “As a school we have always promoted reading for pleasure, and now it's wonderful to have the reading culture at Stenness School officially recognised by the Scottish Book Trust.
“The benefits of curling up with a good book or being read to regularly cannot be underestimated, both academically and in terms of mental health, and that applies to children and adults alike. Almost any day of the week at Stenness you'll find someone with their nose in a book or listening to a story!”
