St Rognvald’s successful “County Home Show” could become annual event

Staff share reasons why they make an extra special effort
The recent successful “County Show” held at Orkney’s largest care home could become an annual event.
In true Orkney spirit, many staff at St Rognvald House gave up their free time, while local businesses gave donations, to ensure “the show went on” in the county this year when most others were cancelled due to the uncertainty surrounding the pandemic.
Kirstin Swannie – one of a trio of staff members behind the idea, alongside Pam Dearness and Indie Harcus – said the event had proven to be very uplifting not just for residents and their families but also the staff themselves.
Relief senior social care worker, Kirstin said: “As we are all more than aware, it has been an incredibly challenging time for everyone, but, in particular, the more vulnerable folk such as our residents. They have missed out on precious time with loved ones; time we tried to replace on their behalf – in essence we had to become their families during the many months without close contact.
“Initially the idea came about as a passing comment, but then we started to think there’s actually no reason why we couldn’t do it, so I pitched the idea to Shirley Miller, our manager, and she said yes.”
Kirstin, Pam and Indie then set to work – some phone calls and emails later and in just two and a half weeks they had managed to pull together a mini County Show, complete with animals for showing and judging, entertainment, food, raffles, a lucky dip, and staff games.
Kirstin, who is a “home-grown” social care worker having qualified through Orkney College UHI, has been at St Rognvald’s for around six years.
“Staff from every part of St Rognvalds, from the kitchen staff to cleaners, domestics to the social carers gave their time willingly to help. Local businesses were just phenomenal and were so supportive in giving donations for the raffle, bottle staff and food for the BBQ. Williamsons, Donaldsons and Argo Bakery simply asked how much we needed and that was what we got. Our local shops stepped up during the pandemic and they are still stepping up now – we must remember to support them always.
“The day itself was just fantastic and we had a steady stream of family members throughout enjoying all that was on offer and just that feeling of normality again – the smiles on everyone’s faces was just priceless.
“We had residents and bairns choosing the winners of the animal and pet shows, and the staff got involved in activities themselves, getting competitive in some traditional races!
“Raising more than £1,000 was a bonus and now means we can ensure our residents benefit by other activities.”
Another plus point has been the real sense of achievement felt by staff, they are rightly proud of what they did, and the enjoyment brought to others.
Indie is a social care assistant, who is currently on maternity leave, but that didn’t stop her volunteering to help.
She said: “It just warmed my heart to see all the loved ones together enjoying the day. There was such a happy buzz and the smiles said it all!”
When asked why they go the extra mile, Kirstin said: “We just love what we do. You get out what you give to the residents’ and their families. Yes, there are some moments that can be challenging, but the rewards are immense in this line of work. We build up special relationships with very special people at the later part of their lives. Their families are always very grateful for what we do and that makes it so worthwhile.”
Kirstin has made a display board with photos for residents and visitors to the facility to enjoy – a reminder of a day well spent with loved ones.
