St Magnus Cathedral survey works underway

Simpson & Brown have been appointed to carry out a quinquennial (five year) survey of St Magnus Cathedral. 

The appointment involves detailed reporting on the building’s current condition with recommendations for the repair and future care of the Cathedral. 

As part of the work, Archilink Measured Surveys have produced a full laser scan measured survey of the building which will be an invaluable tool to use going forward. 

Orkney Islands Council’s Team Manager Heritage and Historic Buildings Conservator at St Magnus Cathedral, Meredith Macbeth, said: “A team from Simpson & Brown have visited the cathedral and carried out an assessment of its current condition. They are now working on a detailed report as to how best to ensure our beautiful and historically significant building remains in good health. We will use the findings of the report to plan, cost and prioritise necessary works at the cathedral for many years to come. 

“Given the cathedral is one of Orkney’s most revered historical treasures and has been named in Europe’s top 100 cathedrals, it is vital that we keep a close eye on the fabric of the building and surrounding site.”

The Cathedral is managed by Orkney Islands Council on behalf of the people of Orkney.
