Six new affordable homes launched to buy in Stromness

Date: 27 October 2022

Time: 10:42

A joint project between Orkney Housing Association Limited (OHAL), Orkney Islands Council and the Scottish Government has seen six new-build properties become available in Stromness for first time buyers or those on low incomes.

Under the Scottish Government's New Supply Shared Equity Scheme, first time buyers can pay between 60% and 80% of the property cost, with the remaining percentage under Scottish Government ownership.

The properties, at Yorston Drive, off Cairston Road in Stromness, consist of two 2-bedroom properties and four 3-bedroom properties - and expressions of interest are being invited now for the houses.

The properties are available to those who are first time buyers or existing or previous home owners unable to sustain or move back into home ownership due to a significant change in their household circumstances.

The properties have been built by OHAL – with contractors Orkney Builders -  funded by the Scottish Government, and with the Council assisting with financial arrangements.

Alan Sim of OHAL is co-ordinating the sale and allocation of the houses. He said: "These are some great quality new homes built to a very high and energy-efficient standard. The New Supply Shared Equity Scheme presents an affordable opportunity for those looking to take that first step and I'd urge those looking to buy, to get in touch with us soon.

Frances Troup is the Council's Head of Community Learning, Leisure and Housing.  She said: "This is a really great example of organisations within the housing sector working together to find a solution to some of the challenges we face. To be able to buy a new build property in Stromness, with financial support, will be the ideal solution for some who are looking to secure their own home."

More information on the houses can be found on the OHAL website – www.ohal.org.uk and details on the New Supply Shared Equity Scheme are available here -  https://www.mygov.scot/new-supply-shared-equity-scheme/how-it-works
