Site clear up plea at Point of Ness
Date: 14 February 2024
A call has been issued to boat owners whose boats are stored at a redundant bit of ground near the Point of Ness in Stromness to move them, as work gets underway on the site.
Sewage improvements works are due to get underway in and around the campsite in advance of this year’s tourist season.
Contractors have asked for the area which is currently home to a number of small boats to be cleared to allow space for the work to start.
The access road through the campsite will also be closed whilst the work takes place.
Work is due to get underway next Monday (19 February) with contractors on site until mid-March.
The works have been funded by Visit Scotland’s Rural Tourism Infrastructure Fund.
Garry Burton is the Council’s Service Manager for Leisure and Culture. He said: “It’s hard to believe given the wintry weather we’ve been experiencing – but the caravan and camping season is just around the corner, with the Point of Ness campsite due to open in just 7 weeks.
“The campsite – with its beautiful views of Hoy Sound and Stromness – is hugely popular with visitors to Orkney and we have invested significantly in improvements to the site over the last few years. This piece of work is the latest stage in that.
“To allow contractors space to work we need the area on which some small boats are currently being stored to be cleared as soon as possible. Ideally, we’d like to work alongside the boat owners to do this rather than having to move them ourselves.”
