Education Scotland has published the findings of an inspection visit to Evie Community School.

During their visit, earlier this year, inspectors worked closely with school staff and talked to pupils, parents and carers.

In their report, they highlight a number of strengths - including:

  • The head teacher is responsive and sensitive to the needs of children and is supported by a hard-working and positive staff team.
  • In the primary classes, children are happy, friendly, polite and well behaved, and benefit from learning in a caring, nurturing environment.
  • Children in the nursery are motived, engaged and thriving.

The Inspectors evaluated three aspects of the nursery sections as good and another as very good. Three aspects of the primary section are evaluated as satisfactory and another as good.

Areas for improvement were identified and discussed with the head teacher and Orkney Islands Council’s education service.

“We are confident that the school has the capacity to continue to improve and so we will make no more visits in connection with this inspection,” their report says.

James Wylie, the Council’s Head of Education and Improvement, said: “I would like to thank staff, parents and the wider community for their engagement with the inspection process and for their dedication to the pupils at the school.

“This was a new model of inspection, with the school assessed against a rigorous and challenging set of standards.

“I am pleased that the school’s strengths are recognised and that the inspectors were confident that the school and education service had the ability to continue to work together to implement improvements with no follow-up visits required from the inspectorate.

Full details of the inspection are available on the Education Scotland website.
