School pupils reminder for local drivers

Date: 18 October 2022

Time: 10:14

Orkney Islands Council is reminding local drivers to take extra care on the roads as schools reopen after the October break.

Schools reopen to pupils on Monday October 24 and with the darker mornings and evenings - and the additional challenges that wintry weather can bring - it's more important than ever that drivers keep a close eye out for children and young people travelling to and from school.

Families are also being encouraged to make use of high vis vests, reflective strips and LED lights to ensure their youngsters are visible on Orkney's roads and pavements.

Councillor David Dawson is Chair of Orkney's Road Safety Forum.  He said: "It's no time at all until the clocks go back bringing us into the time of year, when it's that bit darker as pupils are headed home from school.

"Our young folk head back to school on Monday morning and it's vital that drivers keep a close eye out for them.

"It’s equally important that pupils – whether walking or cycling to school or waiting for the school bus – are encouraged to do everything possible to make themselves seen.

"This can be achieved by wearing high-visibility vests and carrying something bright or hi-viz, such as reflective strips on coats, bags, shoes, or LED flashing lights."
