Rousay bairns cook up their own appeal!
Date: 1 September 2022
The children at Rousay School have a message to any keen cooks out there – “We love our school lunches, they are yummy. Please come and be our cook.”
You can live on the island or commute from the Mainland as the hours fit in with the ferry times.
There’s 22 bairns at the school and Head Teacher, Mrs Katie Lucas, says: “School lunches play a crucial role in ensuring that all children get to eat healthy and nutritious foods - which in turn supports their ability to learn at school.
“Come and join our small but very friendly team here at the school!”
At present the school lunches are prepared and transported across by a member of the Dounby School team but the Council’s Corporate Catering Manager, Scott Pring, says that is a short-term solution.
“Many areas and services are finding it difficult to recruit and Orkney is no different. Many of our catering staff tell us it is very rewarding knowing you are playing a part in keeping the children’s tummies full with what you know is good brain fodder and tasty on top!”
Together with neighbouring islands Egilsay and Wyre, Rousay is part of a three-island community of around 270 people.
