Roads update for week starting Monday 8 January 2024

An update on road closures and delays, due to road and utility works and community events, for the week starting 8 January 2024:
Road works and utility update
Update on 8 January - please note crews will be out and about from Monday 8 January taking down festive lights - starting in Kirkwall on 8 January, and moving onto Stromness over the course of the week, with St Margarets Hope lights likely to be taken down the week starting 15 January . There may be short duration road closures at times to keep everyone safe, so thank you in advance for your patience.
A961 Churchill Barriers
Work to replace fence posts on the four Churchill Barriers is currently on hold so crews can attend to recent storm damage elsewhere. Work is planned to recommence during the week starting 15 January 2024, taking place outwith school transport times wherever possible.
A966 Gorseness Road (Tingwall end) to Woodwick Road
Work to repair areas of carriageway are ongoing with crews temporarily off site. Traffic signals remain in place with some delays to traffic including the No 6 (Tingwall / Birsay) bus service. Motorists are reminded to heed the traffic signals for everyone’s safety and convenience.
A965, B9055 (Brodgar Road) to Stenness Village
The planned work to repair areas of carriageway is currently on hold with works not expected to start until mil January 2024.
A960, St Andrews & Toab
Scottish Water works are still ongoing but will be mainly off A960 and in fields during the next week or so.
Looking Ahead:
Queens Street in Kirkwall will close from Tuesday 16 January to Tuesday 23 January for utility works. More details in the public notice.
A964 bends at Scapa Distillery and Smoogro Road to Orphir Village (carriageway repairs) – currently planned to start during February 2024.
Looking further ahead:
A966 Evie, near Evie Telephone Exchange – Drainage maintenance. To be programmed.
