Roads update for week starting Monday 16 October

A summing up of road delays and closures underway or soon to start in the county due to works, events or cruise, and impacts on public bus services - for week starting Monday 16 October:
Survey work in central Kirkwall:
A reminder of survey works over the next few months on the Town Hall, St Magnus Cathedral, Council offices, and Bishops and Earls Palaces on Watergate. All of the surveys being carried out will involve the use of a crane and road and carpark closures as needed while work is underway. No survey work is planned for the week ahead.
Road works summary:
A965, Finstown
The additional drainage work and streetlighting repair in the vicinity of Creation Cuts are ongoing with the traffic being controlled by three-way temporary traffic signals, with delays for all traffic passing through the area. Residents within the signed traffic management area are advised to present their bins as normal for collection.
A965 east of Finstown - between Sydney Cottage and Marsdene
Drainage works are scheduled to start on 23 October, for around two weeks. Traffic will be controlled by temporary traffic signals with delays for all traffic.
A961 Churchill Barriers
Work to replace fence posts and reflectors on the Churchill Barriers is due to start during the week commencing Monday 16 October 2023, weather and resourcing dependent. The work will affect all four Barriers and is expected to take a few weeks to complete. Traffic will be controlled under a convoy system with delays to traffic and the X1 (Stromness to St Margaret’s Hope) bus service. As far as possible work will be carried out outwith school transport times.
A960 Airport Emergency Access to Tankerness Hall Road
Works started on 28 September 2023 and are expected to finish by Friday 20 October. Temporary traffic signals are in place, with some delays including for the No 3 (Deerness) and No 4 (Airport) bus services. (Once finished at this section, crews will be moving onto the section between Tankerness Hall Road and Groatsetter Road.)
A960 Tankerness Hall Road to Groatsetter Road
Edge strengthening works are planned to start during the week commencing 16 October 2023 and are expected to take around three weeks to complete. The works will be carried out under temporary traffic signals with some delays to all traffic including No 3 (Deerness) and No 4 (Airport) bus services.
A966 Evie, near Evie Telephone Exchange
Crews are off-site at the moment, however work will recommence when design work is completed.
A960, St Andrews & Toab
Scottish Water works are still ongoing but will be mainly off A960 and in fields during the next week or so.
Looking ahead:
- A966 Gorseness Road (Tingwall end) to Woodwick Road (areas of reconstruction), currently planned to start early November 2023 and take approximately four weeks to complete.
- A961 Burray Village (carriageway reconstruction) - to be programmed
- A964 bends at Scapa Distillery and Smoogro Road to Orphir Village (carriageway reconstruction) - to be programmed
- A965 B9055 (Brodger Road) to Stenness Village (carriageway reconstruction) - to be programmed
- A966 Gorseness Road (Tingwall end) to Woodwick Road (areas of reconstruction) - to be programmed
Cruise-related road closures:
There are no further planned cruise liner related road closures for 2023.
