A summing up of road closures and delays due to road works or events - for the week starting Monday 29 January 2024.

A961 Churchill Barriers

Work to replace fence posts on the barriers will restart this week on all four Churchill Barriers, with priority signage and speed reduction in place to control traffic. Short delays to all motorists including the X1 (Stromness to St Margaret’s Hope) public bus service. Wherever possible the works are taking place outwith school transport times.

Broad Street and Broad Street car park, Kirkwall (for Festival of Light event)

Broad Street will be closed from Thursday 1 February 2024 to Sunday 4 February 2024 between the hours of 15:30 and 19:30 each day, for the Kirkwall BID Festival of Light. As part of the event Broad Street car park will be closed from Wednesday 31 January 2024 to Tuesday 6 February inclusive . Traffic signs will be erected to indicate when the Broad Street car park and Broad Street are closed. Public Bus services No 9 (Town Service) and No 4 (Airport) will not be able to access Broad St during the road closure period – passengers are advised to board /disembark these services at Kirkwall Travel Centre or an alternative safe point on the route. Full details of the closures in the public notice at https://www.orkney.gov.uk/News?postid=8749

A966 Gorseness Road (Tingwall end) to Woodwick Road

Works to complete this site are currently on hold due to material supply issues. The temporary traffic signals which are currently on site will remain in place until the work can be completed which will inevitably cause some delays to traffic including the No 6 (Tingwall / Birsay) bus service.

A965, B9055 (Brodgar Road) to Stenness Village

The work to repair the areas of carriageway is currently on hold with works not expected to commence until February 2024.

Laing Street, Kirkwall

Laing Street will be closed between 07:30 and 17:00 daily until 31 March 2024 to enable building works on the Old Library to be carried out. Residents should present their recycling / waste bins as normal for collection.

Queen Street, Kirkwall

Scottish Water works to enable new water connections to the new properties behind the Old Library are currently on hold.

A960, St Andrews & Toab

Scottish Water works are still ongoing but will be mainly off A960 and in fields during the next week or so.


Looking Ahead:

A964 bends at Scapa Distillery and Smoogro Road to Orphir Village (carriageway repairs) – currently planned to start during Feburary 2024.

A966 Evie, near Evie Telephone Exchange – Drainage maintenance.
