Roads update for week starting 26 February 2024

A summing up of road closures and delays due to road works or events - for the week starting Monday 26 February 2024.
Queen Street, Kirkwall
Works to replace a section of damaged pedestrian guard rail are planned to be carried between Monday 26 February 2024 and Friday 1 March 2024. The works will be carried out under temporary traffic signals with some delays to all traffic.
And looking a little further ahead, from Monday 4 March to Sunday 10 March Queen Street will be closed to enable new water connections to the new properties behind the Old Library building.
Residents should present their recycling / waste bins as normal for collection during both these works.
Junction Road (and Main Street), Kirkwall
Works to replace a damaged manhole cover where Junction Roads meets Wellington Street are planned from Wednesday 28 February 2024. Three-way temporary traffic signals will be in place to try minimise delays - and Main Street will be closed to through traffic for the duration of the work.
Kiln Corner Roundabout, Kirkwall
Works to replace a damaged manhole cover are planned from Monday 26 February 2024 - three-way temporary traffic signals will be in place with some delays for all traffic.
Stromness Slab Repairs
A programme of slab repair works in Stromness will start from Monday 4 March 2024, for around five weeks. The work will all be carried out under road closure conditions, with roads being opened to traffic overnight and at the weekends. Pedestrian access will be maintained, as will essential access for deliveries where possible - drivers should speak to site staff to arrange this.
- Week 1 – John Street from North End Road to E Flett Butchers.
- Week 2 – From E Flett Butchers, John Street to No 16 Victoria Street.
- Week 3 – From No 16 Victoria Street to Church Road.
- Week 4 – From Church Road to Hellihole.
- Week 5 – from Hellihole to Ness Road.
Residents should present their recycling / waste bins as normal for collection.
A961 Churchill Barriers
Work to replace fence posts on the barriers on all four Churchill Barriers are ongoing, though there may be days where no works are carried out due to weather. Priority signage and speed reductions are in place to control traffic. Short delays to all motorists including the X1 (Stromness to St Margaret’s Hope) public bus service. Wherever possible the works are taking place outwith school transport times.
A966 Gorseness Road (Tingwall end) to Woodwick Road
It's hoped to restart works here during the week starting 26 February. The temporary traffic signals which are currently on site will remain in place until the work can be completed, with short delays for all traffic including the No 6 (Tingwall / Birsay) bus service.
Laing Street, Kirkwall
Laing Street will be closed from 21 February - 20 March 2024 to enable building works and utility service connections to the Old Library. Residents should present their recycling / waste bins as normal for collection.
A960, St Andrews & Toab
Scottish Water works are ongoing - during week commencing 26 February 2024 there will be temporary traffic signals at the junction of the A960 and B9052, with the works in this area expected to last for around three weeks.
Looking Ahead:
- Kirkwall Slab Repairs – Works are currently planned to start during week commencing Monday 8 April 2024.
- A964 bends at Scapa Distillery and Smoogro Road to Orphir Village (carriageway repairs) – currently planned to start during April 2024.
- A966 Evie, near Evie Telephone Exchange – Drainage maintenance (date TBC)
