Date: 10 January 2025
Time: 12:00
A summary of delays and road closures due to road works and events - for the week start 13 January 2025
First up though a heads up that we may see surface water springing up on our roads over coming days as the week’s snow and ice thaws in the warmer conditions (in addition to the rain forecasted) - please bear this in mind as you’re out and about and go canny.
Ongoing road works closures and delays:
King Street, Kirkwall
Road reconstruction works are planned to start on Monday 3 February 2025 and are expected to take around two months to complete, the works being carried out under road closure conditions for the duration of the work on site. Further details to follow.
Junction Road, Kirkwall
Junction Road will be closed outside the Albert Hotel (between its junctions with the Albert Street car park and Burnmouth Road), as needed from Monday 16 September 2024, for approximately six months as building works are carried out on the Albert Hotel. A signed diversion for motorists and buses will be in place via Ayre Road, Borough Road (past the Police Station) and Great Western Road. Drivers are advised to keep to the diversions as much as possible and avoid using West Castle Street due to bus traffic. Folks wishing to use the Albert Street car park will need to approach via the Kiln Corner roundabout.
Junction Road and Pickaquoy Road near roundabout, Kirkwall
There are temporary three way traffic signals at the Junction Road/Pickaquoy Road roundabout to enable new drainage and electricity connections to the Salvation Army Hall. Works started on 6 January and are expected to take around four weeks to complete.
A965 New Finstown Sub-Station, Firth
Works on the construction of the access to the new Finstown sub-station resumed on 8 January and are expected take around two weeks to complete.
Looking further ahead:
Pier Road, St Margaret’s Hope
Localised road reconstruction works are due to commence during the week starting Monday 20 January 2025 - to coincide with Pentland Ferries’ refit period as far as possible - and are expected to take around three weeks to complete. Where possible the work will be carried out under temporary traffic signals although road closures may be required at times - these will be kept to a minimum where/when possible.
A966, Skiddy Road to Gorseness Road (Tingwall Road), Rendall
The next phase of the work is expected to start on Monday 17 March 2025 and will take around three weeks to complete. This phase will see the junction of the Skiddy Road with the A966 closed for the duration of the work, with traffic on the A966 being controlled by traffic lights and a temporary 30mph speed limit.
