Road works update for week starting Monday 9 May
Date: 6 May 2022
An update on roadworks underway and starting soon in the county, including road closures on the Pickaquoy Road from Tuesday (10 May):
Pickaquoy Road
Update: These works are on hold until further notice. Scottish Water have works planned from Tuesday 10 May, to lay a new foul sewer from the Scottish Water pumping station outside Glaitness Primary School across to cycle track adjacent to Ayre Road. From Tuesday 10 May a road closure will be in place on Pickaquoy Road between its junction with Pickaquoy Loan and Muddisdale Road, with the road closure in the area expected to be in place for around two weeks. Public bus services won’t be travelling down majority of Pickaquoy Road and will not be passing the supermarkets or the Pickaquoy Centre. Instead they will travel down Great Western Road past the old bus stop opposite Lidls, and then travel via the shorefront on Ayre Road, rejoining routes at the Ayre Mills roundabout.
The Meadows
Work is planned to start on Monday 9 May and will take approximately two weeks to complete with The Meadows being closed to all vehicular traffic between its junctions with Thoms Street and the access to the bus parking at KGS. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.
Harray
Road works on the main A986 at Harray are ongoing between Grimeston Road and Refuge Corner - one lane is open under temporary traffic lights. Please keep everyone safe by heeding the speed limit and please allow extra time for your journey.
Tankerness
Patching works are ongoing on Churchyard Road, Swarsquoy Road and Tankerness Hall Road. It's expected works will be complete by the end of the working day on Tuesday 10 May. All work is being carried out under road closure conditions with signed diversion routes being in place where possible.
Westray
A range of surfacing and patching works are due to commence on Monday 9 May with the majority of the works being carried out under road closure conditions - signed diversion routes will be provided where possible and delays minimised where no diversion route is available.
Norseman
Resurfacing is underway on a section of the A966 (Finstown to Birsay road) between the Gorseness Road and Norseman village. The work is being carried out under temporary traffic signals and is expected take around one week to complete.
Denwick Road, Deerness
Patching works are planned to start on Wednesday 11 May, and are expected to take three days to complete. This work will be carried out under road closure conditions with signed diversion routes being provided where possible.
South Ronaldsay
Patching works are planned for Liddle Road, Flaws Road, Barswick Road and Windwick Road from Monday 16 May, for around two weeks. As with the majority of our works of this nature the works will be carried out under road closure conditions. However, much of the work is on roads where no diversion routes available - therefore there will inevitably be delays to vehicles using the roads. Every effort will be made to try to keep all delays to a minimum.
