Road works update for week starting Monday 30 October 2023

Here's a summary of road works underway or soon to start in the county - for week starting Monday 30 October 2023.
A961 Churchill Barriers
Work to replace fence posts on the barriers has been delayed again due to the weather and is now expected to start during week commencing Monday 30 October 2023, with the work expected to take a few weeks to complete. Traffic will be controlled under a convoy system which will unfortunately result in delays to traffic and the X1 (Stromness to St Margaret’s Hope) bus service.
A966 Evie, near Evie Telephone Exchange
There is no work being carried out at the moment, however work will recommence when design work is completed. Which will unfortunately cause some delays to the No 6 (Tingwall) bus service.
A960 Tankerness Hall Road to Groatsetter Road
Works commenced on Thursday 26 October 2023 and are expected to take around three weeks to complete. The works will be carried out under temporary traffic signals which will unfortunately cause some delays to the traffic and the No 3 (Deerness) and No 4 (Airport) bus services.
Historic Environment Scotland (HES)
Watergate between Bishop’s and Earl’s Palaces and a section of Palace Road
Closed from Monday 30 October – Friday 17 November while Historic Environment Scotland (HES) carries out High-Level Masonry inspections at Bishop’s and Earl's Palaces in Kirkwall. Find out more at historicenvironment.scot.
Scottish Water
A960, St Andrews & Toab
Scottish Water works are still ongoing but will be mainly off A960 and in fields during the next week or so.
Looking Ahead:
A960 at junction with Quoydandy Branch Road. It is planned to carry out a survey of the in the area on 7 November 2023, with the survey being carried with the Quoydandy Branch Road being closed and temporary two way traffic signals on the A960.
A966 Gorseness Road (Tingwall end) to Woodwick Road (areas of reconstruction), currently planned to start early November 2023 and take approximately four weeks to complete.
Looking further ahead:
- A961 Burray Village (carriageway reconstruction) - to be programmed
- A964 bends at Scapa Distillery and Smoogro Road to Orphir Village (carriageway reconstruction) - to be programmed
- A965 B9055 (Brodger Road) to Stenness Village (carriageway reconstruction) - to be programmed
